Last weekend we did something I have always wanted to do....we chopped down our OWN Christmas tree. I don't know why cutting my own fresh tree has always had some mystical Christmas fantasy. But, nevertheless, it has always embodied some old fashioned Christmas spirit in my mind. So this year, we went for it. It wasn't like we went on a day long hike in the forest covering miles of ground before we found "the one" (as in the National Lampoons Christmas). Pennsylvania doesn't have tons of public land close to Philadelphia that would allow us to do that. Rather, we found a tree farm that had 11 acres of trees, all for the taking. They had tractor rides (we were way too tough for that), horse petting, free cocoa and cookies, and a 20 foot tall Santa to boot. It was like a Christmas festival compared to the tree shopping of my youth--a dimly lit cage of trees in the parking lot of Kings, every year.
We had a ton of fun and we found a really great tree. It's a bit on the short side because they charged us by the foot. But at least it's fresh. Putting lights on it the next day, I hardly had to sweep up any needles afterward! So, Christmas has arrived at our place. Santa is welcome to stop by anytime. :)

The Christmas Tree

Andrea, we have a tradition to go out to breakfast on the day after Thanksgiving and then cut down our own tree (sounds similar to your tree place--a big tree farm with lots of choices). It's fun to have a fresh tree, but "this here tree" in our front room is pretty skinny and droopy this year, and is dropping lots of needles (we are trying to not complain about it around Julia--she is so proud of the fact that she picked it out). We are seriously considering changing our tradition to: going out to breakfast, then coming home and getting our fake tree out of the basement to decorate. For some reason, that just doesn't sound quite as magical.
Anyway, Merry Christmas! Enjoy your tree.
I LOVE real Christmas trees. We got one once, but we're gonna be in Utah for over two weeks so probably not going to get one this year. That's a fun tradition that I want to start with our family.
What are you talking about?! Shopping for a tree by King's was great fun. The dim lights added to the ambiance. Besides, then they couldn't see you running through the trees, throwing snowballs, and otherwise acting like your parents had no control.
We always got our tree at Kings, too! I have the same memories...a kind of dark cage, lots of trees smashed together, and being too short to actually tell how big the tree we were picking was. Sounds like a fun adventure! Merry Christmas!
Show us a picture of the tree already....
Or is Keith drying it and planning to carve some kind of master piece out of it??
